FAS4 and FAS5 PERFORMANCE | Past Storms
TS BETA, 2020

  • Dates: Sep 21st – Sep 23rd

  • Duration: 3 days

  • After making landfall near Matagorda Peninsula, Texas, Tropical Storm Beta moved north past Houston. It has caused 13 inches of rainfall in total in the Brays Bayou Watershed over three days.

  • The most intense rainfall occurred on the late night of September 21st and the next morning, with 10 inches of rainfall in 24 hours near Texas Medical Center.

  • Local flooding occurred in many places including Highway 288, causing property damages. The water level in Brays Bayou was close to bank-full, but eventually did not overtop the bank. As a result, no fluvial flooding occurred, and thus large-scale flooding along the Brays Bayou was avoided.

TS IMELDA, 2019

  • Dates: Sep 16th – Sep 20th, 2019

  • Storm Duration: 3 days

  • With some areas in Houston getting over 43 inches of rain, Imelda has caused five deaths and a total damage of over 5 billion dollars.

  • The Texas Medical Center received 8.5 inches of rain in three days during Imelda.

  • Water in Brays Bayou near TMC has reached a maximum height of 39 ft, in comparison to  its normal height at 17 ft.

DECEMBER 7TH FLOOD, 2018

  • Date: Dec 7th, 2018

  • Storm Duration: 9 hours

  • Houston Started to receive heavy rainfall starting from the evening of Dec 7th, continuing until 3am in the morning. Flooding occurred around midnight, when many roadways and neighborhoods were under water.

  • The Texas Medical Center received 4.5 inches of rain starting from the night of the 7th.

  • Water in Brays Bayou near TMC has reached a maximum height of 37 ft, 20 ft higher than its normal height at 17 ft. The gage height is comparable to that of Tropical Storm Imelda and the Independence Day Flood.

INDEPENDENCE DAY FLOOD, 2018

  • Date: July 4th, 2018

  • Storm Duration: 7 hours

  • Heavy rainfall hit Houston on the morning of Independence Day, followed by flash floods. Many roadways and neighborhoods were flooded.

  • The Texas Medical Center received 5.6 inches of rain on July 4th.

  • Water in Brays Bayou near TMC has reached a maximum height of 37 ft, 20 ft higher than its normal height at 17 ft. The gage height is close to its height during Tropical Storm Imelda.

HURRICANE HARVEY, 2017

  • Dates: Aug 26th– Sep 2nd, 2017

  • Storm Duration: 5 days

  • The devastating flooding caused more than 100 deaths, and caused 125 billion dollars in damage (source: Houston Chronicle)

  • The Texas Medical Center received over 29 inches of rain over the week of Harvey.

  • The USGS Gage for Brays Bayou on Main Street near Texas Medical Center recorded a maximum gage height of 45 feet, which is 28 feet higher than its normal height.
